Tragic Boating Accident Near Sandusky Sand Bar

On the evening of July 4, 2020, a tragic boating accident occurred near the Sandusky sand bar on the Mississippi River. At approximately 6 p.m., 24-year-old Devyn Michael Broeker from Donnellson was being pulled on a flotation device when he fell into the river. Despite immediate search efforts, Broeker did not resurface.

The Keokuk Volunteer Emergency Corps (KVEC) promptly responded to the scene, joining forces with local authorities and rescue teams. After an extensive search, Broeker’s body was recovered from the river. He was subsequently transported to the Keokuk Area Hospital Morgue and later to Ankeny, Iowa, for an autopsy.

This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to water safety guidelines, especially during recreational activities on the river. KVEC extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Devyn Michael Broeker during this difficult time.
