Emergency corps to hold event in Baker’s memory

The Keokuk Volunteer Emergency Corps’ first fish fry and auction is Saturday at the Keokuk Labor Temple, Third and Blondeau streets.

Following the recent death of KVEC Chief Kevin Baker, fundraiser organizers have decided to hold the event in Baker’s memory, according to his successor Charles Biddenstadt. Baker joined KVEC in 1982, and became chief in 1994.

KVEC was founded about 50 years ago to serve not just Keokuk, but the Tri-State Area. Biddenstadt said KVEC members have traveled as far as Quincy, Ill., and Canton, Mo., to assist with river search and recovery efforts.

Most of KVEC’s work is on water – assisting stranded boaters or responding to accidents and drownings – but the organization also helps the Keokuk police and fire departments with traffic control during crashes and fires.

“We’re about bringing back people’s loved ones safe and sound,” Biddenstadt said. “In the case of a drowning, it’s about bringing closure to families. We also help keep our fire department and our police department safe. We’re a big asset.”

Twenty-three men and women comprise KVEC. They train once a month in various ways – boating, rope handling and working with divers. They’re also certified in CPR and first aid.

Food will be served beginning at 4 p.m., and the auction starts at 6:30 p.m. Fast Forward will provide live music following the auction.

Tickets for a 50/50 raffle are $1 each, or six for $5.

Biddenstadt said proceeds from Saturday’s event will allow KVEC to update and add equipment.
